UIC LINCOLN HALL
SCHEMATIC DESIGN FINALIZED |
Designed for LEED® Silver
The University of Illinois Chicago Campus was built in its entirety in the early 1960s. Designed by Walter Netch, the campus is a series of concrete structures and pre-cast facades. The freeze-thaw cycles of the Midwest, though, have been detrimental to the exposed concrete structures. In addition to the exterior deterioration, Lincoln Hall is technically dated and no longer meets the needs of the current classroom environment.
The complexity of this project consists of repairing and protecting the deteriorating exterior structure with a solution intended to last for the next 50 years coupled with a plan to provide daylighting and views that were not part of the original design. Mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems also will be brought up to new classroom environmental and computer technology requirements. At the same time they will be upgraded to meet current building codes, ADA and LEED® sustainable design criteria.
The sustainable goal of the University for the project is USGBC LEED® Silver certification, the first in its system. The design solution will respect the original architectural character while cladding the structure in a new curtain wall system. The mechanical systems will utilize a geothermal system for cooling and heating and the interior space will enhance the learning experience inside and outside the classroom with views, daylighting, collaborative lounge spaces and the technology needed in the 21st century classroom.
