Design Organization worked with the City of Michigan City to study the alternative reuse of Fire Station No. 2. The building now effectively accommodates the new program requirements with fire administration being located in what was originally the fire fighters living quarters and the City Training (Municipal Departments, Fire and Police) and Emergency Operations Center jointly located in the apparatus bays.
The city had also expressed interest in sustainable design integration. Therefore, high reflectance roofing, landscaping to minimize heat islands, bioswales for storm water filtering, low VOC (paints, caulks, and adhesives), recycled building materials (ceiling tile, carpet, flooring, drywall, and metal studs), new mechanical systems for improved indoor air quality and energy efficiency, interior daylighting and others design elements were included.
