Porter County Government selected DO to develop an existing facilities assessment, space needs study, long-range plan and cost analysis to meet their needs into the year 2010. The resulting study demonstrated a need for 110,000 square feet.
The existing 40,000-square-foot courthouse represented government and symbolized community image and pride in a thriving Central Business District. Demolition would destroy the centerpiece of the community image. Feasible alternative reuse was unlikely at best. By a thorough building analysis, DO determined extra space could be added within the existing courthouse by inserting floor structure above the unused ceiling spaces of the third floor. Therefore, DO recommended the renovation and internal space expansion to the courthouse, the construction of a new administration center and parking garage within a two-block perimeter.
