UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS MEDICAL CENTER AT CHICAGO
Chicago
One of the most successful departments at the University of Illinois, Chicago Medical Center, the UIC Inpatient Dialysis Unit was working out of old cramped quarters where six treatment stations were squeezed into two existing patient rooms and a small abandoned lab area. DO renovated and expanded the unit, converting the two rooms and an adjacent waiting area and office into a new nine-station unit capable of holding seven full-size gurneys, two treatment chairs, a Fellows office and support spaces. The final result was a first-class dialysis unit, delivered on time and under budget.
DO also surveyed the Chicago Outpatient Care Center to reclassify the building for ambulatory care according to NFPA 101, 2000. Similarly, DO surveyed the Mile Square Health Center when it was cited by IDPH with several building code deficiencies. The University recognized the necessity of determining the extent of all building problems in order to develop a detailed cost estimate and schedule to correct them.
