The University of Illinois Chicago Campus was built in the early 1960s. Designed by Walter Netsch, the campus is a series of concrete structures and pre-cast facades. The freeze-thaw cycles of the Midwest, though, have been detrimental to the exposed concrete structures. In addition to the exterior deterioration, Lincoln Hall is technically dated and no longer meets the needs of the current classroom environment.
The design solution will respect the original architectural character, while cladding the structure in a new curtain wall system. The mechanical systems will utilize a geothermal system for cooling and heating.
The interior space will enhance the learning experience both inside and outside of the classroom with views, daylighting, and collaborative lounge spaces, and the technology needed in the 21st century classroom.
